Ultrasonic velocity · QSV series

Ultrasonic velocity gauges.

QSV series Grey and ductile (nodular) iron

QSV gauges determine the cast iron type (grey or ductile) and the nodularity percentage from the ultrasonic propagation velocity, and can also be used to classify materials by that velocity. The measurement starts from the part's thickness, entered manually or from a digital calliper connected via the dmq interface cable.

Is this your equipment?

Yes, if you need to

  • Classify grey or ductile (nodular) cast iron without a destructive test.
  • Estimate the nodularity percentage of a cast iron part.
  • Separate or identify materials by their ultrasonic propagation velocity.

No, if you need to

  • Measure the wall thickness of the part: that's a QS series (ultrasonic).
  • Measure hardness: that's a QH series.
  • A full metallographic analysis with sectioning and microscopy.

How it works

Propagation velocity, not thickness.

The QSV DL sends an ultrasonic pulse through the part that bounces back off the opposite face, just like an ultrasonic thickness gauge — but it runs the calculation in reverse: from an already known thickness (entered manually or from a digital calliper) and the pulse's round-trip time, it calculates the actual propagation velocity of sound in that material.

That velocity varies with the material's microstructure: in cast iron it's directly related to the graphite shape (flake in grey iron, spheroidal in ductile iron) and to the nodularity percentage, so the QSV displays the measured propagation velocity and, from that value, you classify the cast iron type and estimate the nodularity percentage. The same principle lets you classify and separate materials by propagation velocity when their external appearance isn't enough to tell them apart.

dmq interface for digital calliper connection

Compatible with digital callipers.

The QSV DL accepts thickness input from an external digital calliper (InSize or Mitutoyo) connected via the dmq interface cable, speeding up data capture compared with manual entry.
